Central Library
In 1967 the city of Mosul witnessed a radical change in its
educational and cultural life which will lead, later, to subsequent
developments. As established in that year, the University of Mosul
at the same time founded the Central Library which remained a
cultural and scientific edifice in spite of that it was at the
beginning a small building with a small number of employees.
The University gives the library a special attention and provides it
with the necessary capabilities to be prominent among the libraries
of Universities in Iraq. A new building was established for the
library in the center of the University which is about (ten
thousand) square meters and consists of three floors containing
rooms for reading and research. At that time the University
contracts with one of the Danish firms to furnish and provide the
library with the most necessary developed materials.
In 1980 the library has moved to its new building and since that
date the library took serious steps and made great strides to become
one of the greatest cultural and scientific institutions in the
country. The library is regarded as an edifice of science and
knowledge as it includes the techniques and publications of more
than half a million cultural materials, including (3600) titles of
Arabic and foreign periodicals as well as other collections of
theses, governmental publications and books published by the
organizations of the United Nations and rare books.
The library offers its services through various applications of
mechanical systems using the rules of bibliographic and technical
information on CD-ROMs and that led to establish a special unit
called the Electronic Library. In addition to the many fields
created by the library through the development of the Internet unit,
there are other services provided by other units using techniques
based on audio-visual materials, which include displaying and
recording of scientific films in the programs of Language Teaching
and Readers Guidance.
Recently, the library has witnessed a steady growth, accelerated
significantly in the provision of services to the researchers. The
library staff has pledged to overcome all the difficulties and
constraints with vigor, dedication and self-denial. Among the works
conducted in the library are the maintenance and renovation of many
of the library service utilities as well as maintaining the
relations between the administration of the library and its
emoloyees through scheduled meetings of the Director General of the
library with the heads of departments and others the to discuss the
achievements and assess the work of the library for the time being.
The library has established new departments and units as
maintaining the indexes, binding the books, periodicals, electronic
library, and the library of Ashur Banipal and the library of Ibn
Khaldun. The last two libraries are within the main library which
include a number of colleges away from university-based centers that
deal with heritage and Assyrian cuneiform studies, and perhaps the
introduction of an automated system to the administrative and
technical sections of the library is regarded as a step forward to
facilitate the functioning of the sections of the library and
provide better services to the researchers.
Finally, the great scientific project (the Iraqi Virtual Science
Library) has been adopted by our library in association with the
libraries of Universities in Baghdad, Basrah and Salah Elddin.
Recently the library witnessed a steady increase in the number of
researchers (students, teaching staff, etc) which forms a remarkably
great pressure to the various sections of the library, especially,
the reading rooms and services. The daily estimated number of
library visitors is about (1000) including
undergraduate and postgraduate students, teachers and researchers.
The daily borrowing of publications is about 400 books and
periodicals.
This, if anything, indicates the civilized behavior and good
services of library employees with the researchers. One of the
scientific priorities of the library concerns is to maintain
relevance and cultural exchanges with intellectuals and writers of
the province through the holding of poetic evenings and cultural
forums. This is a small part of a great ambition holds by the
employees of this great scientific and cultural edifice.
Administrative Structure Units
Division of Technical Procedures
It is specialized in the preparation of the sources of technical
information as selection, acquisition and technical processing,
storage, and includes the following units:
A- Acquisition Unit
The Acquisition unit is one of the most important technical units in
the library which includes:
1 – Providing the library with Arabic and foreign publications in
addition to all theses, audio-visual aids that come to the library
and also addressing the scientific institutions and universities to
get their updated publications.
2 - Contacting the publishers and book - agents to get the
catalogues of the latest versions of publications issued by these
institutions.
3 - Sending the books to the faculties of the University after
indexing and classifying them by the (filing) since the acquisition
section is a major supplier of printed materials for all the
University colleges.
4 - Marking the books sent to colleges in records of Arabic and
foreign languages.
5 - Pointing the damaged and lost books in records in order to be
omitted from the library records.
6 - Checking the receipts to verify the publications delivery and
claiming for any violation of the deal.
7 - Registering the publications in the Arabic and foreign annual
records to check the registration number in the registry of the
printed books.
8 – Displaying the updated publications to inform the researchers.
2 - Indexing and Classification Unit:
This unit is in charge of classifying and indexing the materials
that are received from the department of acquisition according to
the Dewey Decimal System, a system used in all Iraqi libraries. The
classification system that is used in the countries of the world (OCLC
on Line Computer Library Center) is also used in the library via the
internet and this is what makes the numbers category in the books of
the Central Library is the same as those used in the libraries of
the developed countries to reach a unified indexing and using the
automated system for lending and borrowing.
The general index is divided into two main groups:
The first is concerned with the publications in Arabic and the
second with the foreign materials and both of them are sub-divided
into two parts:
A - Author and Title Index: includes cards that begin with the
name of author and institution or body, and also includes cards that
begin with the titles of publications as set out in the title page
of the book.
B – Subject-Headings Index: includes cards that begin with the main
topic of the book, noting that there may be more than one subject
heading in the book.
When you use the indexes, you should note the following:
1 - All the cards are arranged alphabetically in the word indexes
drawers, delete the definite particle (Ηα=the)
if it comes at the beginning of the card in Arabic and delete, A,
AN, THE, if they begin the card in English.
2 – The classification number is the most important part of the
card since it indicates the place of the book on the shelves of the
library.
3 - Note the symbol above the classification number, which tells
you the section where you can find the book.
3 - Gift and Exchange Unit:
This unit is in charge of receiving the library incoming
publications through the gifts or exchange as well as sending the
books to the Universities and cultural institutions through an
exchange among the libraries. This unit receives also the
publications from their authors who dedicate them personally to the
library, in turn; it sends them an official appreciation letter.
4 - Index Maintenance Unit:
This unit undertakes the task of receiving cards for books that are
classified and indexed in the Indexing section which, in turn sort
these cards and to insert them in their own drawers which are
alphabetically classified and located in the courtyard of the
library.
5 – Book-Binding Unit:
This unit has been established recently to bind the books,
periodicals and special collections and restore the materials that
need maintenance after getting the raw materials from the local
market by the purchasing committee. This unit binds the books with
low cost and saves the amounts that were available previously for
binding the books outside the library and this saves time and keeps
the publications from loss.
