Mosul City


    Nineveh is one of the Iraqi provinces which has deeply ancient history.  As it is one of the oldest three cities in the  world, and is attributed to a significant portion of discoveries and cultural mission.  The province of Dohuk boarded Mosul at the north and at the south the province of Salah al-Din .In the east the province of Tamim and Irbil and from the west the Syrian Arab Republic, and therefore confined to this province between longitudes 25'41 and 15'44 east longitude and between latitudes 15 '34 and 3' 37 North. Nineveh was the center of the Assyrian civilization in terms of the four capitals of this civilization  which are Nineveh , Nimrud, Kalih , Doroshrookin (Kersbad) and Assyria ..

Although there is conjecture the existence of the missing fifth Assyrian capital which is Mghar (800 acres) where the archaeological excavations indicate that they belong to the middle Assyrian time.

The population of Nineveh province, according to census 1997 are (2,174,372) and expected to increase reaching up to (2,408,287) in 2007 . They are distributed over an area of (37 323) km. There are 9 districts in Nineveh  .   

Tigris river runs through the city along  214 km except lake of Mosul dam with a length of 47.5 km in addition to the Greater Zab and Khazar, which has a tributary called Alcolml passes them. The ruins of Nineveh (the fortified fence) spread along the eastern bank of the Tigris River. It is believed that the name of the city was linked to the gods of Nineveh Nina (goddess of fish or whale) as well as the Prophet peace be upon him nicknamed Younis relegated to the nun and the famous story with the whale, which was endorsed by the Holy Quran.                                                                                                     

Nineveh surrounded by four walls of the great destinations (6.6 km) supported trenches of Eastern destinations to form a trapezoidal perimeter of 12 km, includes rib 2-1 km.

Among the most prominent features of Nineveh sanding the mosque of the Prophet Younis  located on a hill of repentance (Tawbah), and the Prophet Younis  is known as the owner of the whale (Thannoun). He tests the Almighty that he swallowed by the whale  for a certain and delivered on a hill of repentance and covered with paper of pumpkins and returned to guide the people of Nineveh. At the opposite side of Tawbah hill lies beneath  Ashurbanipal Library, the first and the greatest library in the history which established by the young Assyrian King Ashurbanipal which includes more than one hundred thousand( Ruqayim) which are mud Layers used for writing .                                                        

In the west bank of Tigris you notice  the Great Mosque with its minaret, known as the famous minaret of Alhadbaa which also known as AlNouri.

 The construction of this mosque was at the time of Nur ad-Din Zinki . The mosque of the Prophet Shit peace be upon him , the mosque of the Prophet Gerges peace be upon him and the Umayyad Mosque, known as AlMussafi  Mosque ( the liquidator) are considered  the oldest mosques in the Muslim world is located in the heart of the popular area known as Alkuazin, which was held in which popular industries of the mud Mufkhor spreading there. You can see on the west bank also wetness of Atabique state in Mosul known as the Castle of Bashtabia and next the shrine of Imam Yahya ibn al-Qasim and beside the remains of construction known as Qara-Saray and the Arabian Front (Hisen Arabaya). Going to the southern area of the city you will see there remains of the Arabian city Elhoudra, which represents  the entrance to the desert in Iraq. There are also signs of Nimrod and the remnants of wall Nineveh. Mosul also was the city of many famous poets  over the centuries such as Abu Tammam,Ibn Atheer ,Ibn Jinni and  Ibn Alshaar Almosulli .
